Tiger Recovery in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve
Established in 2010, Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) has experienced historical declines in tiger populations due to habitat degradation, fragmentation and anthropogenic pressures. To address this conservation challenge, the Tiger Recovery Programme at STR was initiated in 2017, aimed at restoring a viable and self-sustaining breeding population of tigers in the northern Western Ghats. In collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), STR implemented India’s first scientifically managed tiger translocation programme in the Western Ghats, integrating founder tigress translocation with scientific monitoring, habitat and prey management, strengthened protection and community participation to establish a secure, viable and genetically sustainable tiger population.
Phase I (2017–2022): Scientific Foundation for Tiger Recovery
The primary objectives of Phase I were to assess the feasibility of tiger recovery by identifying suitable habitat and evaluating social acceptance, conduct Phase IV monitoring and estimate prey-predator populations, map landscape composition and ecological connectivity, and assess the socio-economic structure, human-wildlife interactions, and ecosystem services across the Sahyadri landscape.
Between 2017 and 2022, extensive scientific assessments were undertaken to evaluate the ecological potential of Sahyadri Tiger Reserve for tiger recovery. These included camera trapping, prey density estimation, carnivore sign surveys, vegetation assessments, habitat suitability modelling, and connectivity analyses. The findings confirmed that STR possesses suitable habitat and an adequate prey base to support a viable tiger population. Prey densities remained consistently high, ranging from 23.25 to 29.55 individuals/km², while habitat suitability modelling identified approximately 451 km² of suitable tiger habitat with an estimated ecological carrying capacity of about 27 tigers under optimal management conditions.
A major milestone was achieved in 2018, when an adult male tiger was camera-trapped in Chandoli National Park, marking the first confirmed tiger record in the reserve after a gap of three years. Continued monitoring, including the documentation of tiger scat in 2019, further confirmed the persistent use of the landscape by dispersing tigers, providing strong scientific evidence that Sahyadri could support tiger recovery.
Phase I also emphasized strengthening conservation management and community participation. Key interventions included the formation and support of Village Eco-Development Committees (EDCs), conservation awareness programmes, digital compensation for human-wildlife conflict losses, prey augmentation through the release of approximately 50 Chital at Zolambi, capacity building of frontline forest staff, and habitat improvement measures. These integrated efforts significantly enhanced management effectiveness, leading to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve being awarded a “Very Good” rating in the Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) 2022.
Phase II (2025–Present): Active Tiger Recovery
The Tiger Recovery Project aims to restore a viable and self-sustaining tiger population in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve through a scientifically planned conservation approach. The major objectives include habitat recovery and prey augmentation, long-term monitoring of tigers, co-predators, prey populations, and habitat conditions, conservation and restoration of wildlife corridors to enhance landscape connectivity, and community engagement through conservation education, assessment of human-wildlife interactions, and evaluation of ecosystem services across the landscape.
Active Tiger Recovery Programme
Building on the scientific foundation established during Phase I, the project entered its Active Tiger Recovery Phase during 2025–2026. Based on the recommendations of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), three founder tigresses were selected for translocation to establish a breeding population in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. Two tigresses (STR-T4 and STR-T5) were translocated from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, while the third tigress (STR-T6) was translocated from Pench Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra. The selection was based on reproductive age, health status, genetic suitability,
behavioural adaptability, and compatibility with the recipient habitat. Prior to translocation, each tigress underwent comprehensive veterinary examination, disease screening, and was fitted with satellite-GPS/VHF radio collars for long-term monitoring.
The tigresses were transported in specially designed transport crates under the supervision of wildlife veterinarians and technical experts. Upon arrival, STR-T4 and STR-T5 were placed in specially constructed acclimatization (soft-release) enclosures, where their health, feeding behaviour, stress levels, and adaptation to the new environment were closely monitored before release. Following successful acclimatization, both tigresses were soft released into the wild. In contrast, STR-T6, translocated from Pench Tiger Reserve, was hard released directly into suitable habitat based on expert assessment and site conditions.
Following their release, all founder tigresses are being intensively monitored using satellite-GPS collars, VHF telemetry, camera traps, and ground-based tracking. Monitoring focuses on movements, habitat use, prey utilization, survival, dispersal, and adaptation to the landscape. Simultaneously, habitat management interventions, including prey augmentation, anti-poaching measures, ecological monitoring, and capacity building of frontline staff, are being implemented to improve habitat quality and protection. Community engagement, conservation awareness, and socio-economic assessments are also integral components of the programme, promoting coexistence between people and wildlife. Together, these integrated conservation actions are aimed at restoring a self-sustaining tiger population and strengthening ecological connectivity across the northern Western Ghats.
